This year's project was inspired by the book "Ciel, mon mari!" or "Sky My Husband!" by Jean-Loup Chiflet, where idiomatic expressions are translated literally, to strange effect.

Some examples from the workshop:

• "Il y a du monde au balcon!" gives: "It there have of the world at the balcony!" or "That's a crowded balcony!" (English meaning: "She's got a big chest!")

• "Il m'a renvoyé l'ascenseur" gives: "He me sent back the elevator," or "He gave me the elevator back." (English meaning: "He returned the favor.")

• "Ça ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard," gives: "That does not break three paws of a duck," (English meaning: "It's nothing to write home about."

The students successfully collaborated on this film, finding idiomatic expressions, translating them word for word, and then figuring out the equivalent in the other language. A great way to examine how a culture visualizes concepts, and to compare this with another culture's solution.
